Federal Bureau of Prisons Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons Nationwide System after a Lincoln County case or connection, begin with the federal custodian rather than the county jail roster. No BOP institution was identified in Lincoln County. A person may still enter federal custody elsewhere, pass through U.S. Marshals Service detention, or leave BOP while remaining under another authority. The BOP locator can show a past release date, a future projection, or a custody label. Each result must be read within its federal scope and checked against the federal court record when the legal outcome matters.

Federal Bureau of Prisons Scope

The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates a nationwide system for sentenced federal prisoners. The Lincoln County facility map contains no BOP prison within the county. That absence does not mean a Lincoln County resident, defendant, or person arrested locally can never enter federal custody. Federal defendants may be held in a contract jail or under U.S. Marshals Service control before designation to a BOP institution elsewhere.

The correct source depends on the stage. BOP is the main locator for a person serving or formerly serving a federal prison sentence. A federal court docket and signed release order control a pretrial or case disposition question. USMS manages prisoners from court-ordered custody through acquittal, conviction and BOP delivery, or another ordered disposition. The Lincoln County sheriff roster proves only whether a person left that county booking.

Search Federal Prison Release Records

The BOP Inmate Locator supports number and name searches. A number is the strongest route when available. Accepted identifiers include the BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, and INS number. A name search can be narrowed with race, age, and sex. Match the register number and demographic details before reading the result.

  1. Select the identifier search when a federal number is known, then enter the exact number and type.
  2. Otherwise, search the full legal name and add the available age, race, and sex fields.
  3. Open or read the matching result and preserve both the Location and Release Date labels.
  4. Decide whether the date is past or future and whether the location says Released, In Transit, Unknown, or an institution.
  5. Compare the federal result with the court docket, especially for a pretrial release or disputed sentence event.
  6. Use BOP records or FOIA for a durable record when the public locator cannot answer the narrow question.

Search results remain subject to the BOP record's own date and status limits. Save the register number for later confirmation.

Read BOP Release Status Labels

BOP instructs readers to examine both Location and Release Date. A past date with no institution listed can support release from BOP custody. A Location value of “RELEASED” means the person is no longer in BOP custody. That is an affirmative statement about BOP only. It does not rule out state, local, immigration, or another law-enforcement custody.

“IN TRANSIT” is not a release. It can mark movement between institutions or another custody stage. “UNKNOWN” can reflect an undetermined term, including an unsentenced, pretrial, or other special status. A future release date is projected. BOP warns that sentence recalculations, including First Step Act work, can make future dates change or appear temporarily inaccurate.

Released
No longer in BOP custody, without deciding other custody or supervision.
Not in BOP custody
A scoped statement that does not identify every possible current custodian.
In Transit
Movement or processing within the federal custody path, not community release.
Unknown
An undetermined BOP term or special status that needs another federal source.
Future date
A projection that can change before actual release processing.

The public locator generally covers federal prisoners released after 1982. Older federal records may require the National Archives or another historical-record route. A failed search can also reflect spelling, identifier error, stage of custody, or a person held by USMS but not yet in the BOP locator.

Note: “Not in BOP custody” answers one agency question; it does not certify freedom from every federal, state, local, or immigration hold.

Where Federal BOP Releases Go

A completed BOP sentence can lead to community release, but the destination and legal status vary. The person may enter supervised release, a court-ordered period monitored in the community. They may also move through a residential reentry setting or leave BOP for state, local, or immigration custody under a documented detainer. The locator's Released label alone does not provide the entire destination.

The BOP Release and Arrival form inventories fields that can exist in the agency record. These include inmate and register number, releasing institution, release date and method, community or detainer destination, transportation, proposed residence, and supervising jurisdictions. The form's existence does not make every completed record public to any requester. It does show how a focused request can name the desired fields.

Federal handoff: A BOP release can be an exit from federal prison into another custodian. Confirm destination before calling it a community return.

USMS Release Before BOP Custody

The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner program controls many federal prisoners from the court's custody order until acquittal, release, BOP delivery, or another ordered outcome. USMS has no comprehensive public historical locator comparable to BOP's. Its Prisoner Tracking System contains processing, placement, safekeeping, and disposition data, but public access is restricted.

For federal pretrial release, obtain the federal docket and signed release order through the court clerk or PACER. Ask USMS only whether it can provide limited current-custody confirmation. A person can leave Lincoln County Jail on a federal hold and then remain confined under USMS authority. A missing county roster result or county release timestamp must not be described as federal community release.

For a sentenced transfer, continue with the BOP locator after designation. If an individual has not yet appeared, use the court record and limited USMS contact rather than inventing a destination. USMS FOIA is available, but privacy and law-enforcement exemptions can sharply restrict histories, photographs, and arrival or departure details.

Request Federal BOP Release Records

The public locator is a convenience search, not a certified release packet. For a durable record, describe the existing BOP material sought. Include the full name, register number, date range, institution if known, and the exact fields needed. Ask for the release date and method, last institution, destination or detainer entry, and supervising jurisdiction when releasable.

The BOP Freedom of Information Act office is the federal request route. Privacy Act and law-enforcement exemptions can limit a third party's access. Request segregable portions, meaning nonexempt parts that can be released after protected details are removed. A denial of some content should not be filled with speculation. The person's own request or proper authorization may follow different access rules.

Lincoln County to Federal Custody

The sheriff's affirmative release card is strong evidence that a person left a specific Lincoln County booking. It is not enough to establish where the person went. Ask the sheriff whether the release record lists a federal hold, USMS pickup, detainer destination, or other receiving agency. Preserve the booking number and exact release time, then connect that local event to the federal court or custody record.

When the sheriff card has expired, request the booking sheet, jail docket entry, release sheet, release date and time, authority, destination, and receiving agency. Lincoln County lists the sheriff at 215 Justice Street, Brookhaven, MS 39601, phone 601-833-5231, and the jail-information line at 601-833-5251. A dated request is stronger than an urgent message through a contact form that is not monitored at all times.

The Lincoln County released-inmate record path explains the local half of this two-custodian check. Use the BOP or federal record for the federal half. This prevents a transfer out of the county jail from being mistaken for release from all custody.

Confirm a Federal Actual Release

Use two records when the route crosses systems. A BOP Released result or past release date supports departure from BOP. The federal docket explains the underlying order and any supervised-release term. A BOP release record may identify a destination or detainer. If another custodian received the person, check that agency directly.

Do not substitute VINELink for the BOP locator. Mississippi SAVIN covers MDOC and participating county jails, not the nationwide federal prison system. Likewise, the Lincoln County 48-hour feed covers departure from the county detention center, not BOP status. Each source owns only its event. The final statement should name the agency, date, status label, and any confirmed destination.
